Kudos to

Our residents who made the Riverside recycling program one of the highest volume and participation programs in the western suburbs. Last year Riverside residents recycled over 1300 tons of material with the average household recycling 975 pounds of material. According to the Environmental Protection Agency's figures, this helped conserve nearly 11,000 trees and 4-1/2 million gallons of water!  WoHOO!

Gina Bellan Heck, Starbucks barrista at the Broadview Target, for encouraging employees to not leave water running in the sink.  The employees have embraced this policy and they say they are now much more conscious of the water they use in their own homes!   Way to go Gina!

to John Haugland who summed up the environmental crisis in one equation:  I > R which means the Impact of human existence has  overcome the planet's ability to Restore itself.  We need to change the equation mainly through reduced/responsible consumption and responsible/innovative technology.  The other piece is reducing population which is a much harder thing to impact.
The Riverside Public Library, which has a battery disposal  jar at the front desk!  Bring your used batteries there for safe disposal to help protect our water.

Richard and Ellen Benya who were spotted walking out of Riverside Foods with reusable grocery bags!

The Riverside Public Library for consciously documenting their efforts in conservation and publishing a "Project Green" document available for public viewing.  (See home page)  They will soon be hosting a Green Page on their website as well!  Special kudos to Dorothy Sikora, Program and Public Relations Coordinator, Riverside Public Library

The Kemp Family on Fairbank Road, for their lawn-less, eco- friendly front yard!

Katie Kruse, Mary Monahan, Peg Sweeney, and Rose Santuro of the St Mary Respect Life Committee for their excellent efforts to reuse, reduce, and recycle! They organized a clothes and toys resale event that recycled hundreds of items and raised over $4000 for their cause.
